General information:
Dziwnów is a fishing port and summer resort situated between the Baltic
coast and the Dziwna River on a sandy peninsula formed by the sea.
The population is about 4,100.
The first written records about Dziwnów (know this time as Dievenow)
comes from the 13th century.
Until the 13th century it belonged to the duke of West Pomerania and
was then occupied by Brandenburg.
Dziwnów is at present an important fishing harbour with facilities
located on the northern bank at the mouth of Dziwna River. There is
a road lift bridge, which opens for passing vessels. The harbour is
conveniently situated to all water and road connections. Cutters and
boats permanently mooring in the harbour operate on the Baltic fishing
grounds.
Near Dziwnów, there are abundant herring fishing grounds, of 6 to 12
Nm away from the port, exploited mainly during winter.
During the period of 15 March to 15 June annually, fishing vessels with
drift nets are engaged in fishing mainly for herring within 15 miles of
the coast, from about longitude 15°E to 18°E. In summer cutters
operate on the fishing grounds near Kołobrzeg, of 30 to 40 miles away
from Dziwnów and cod is the main species to be found there. Some smaller
boats are fishing for fresh water species on the Zalew Kamieński, an
extensive inland water which lies on the southern side of Dziwnów.
The fishing co-operative BELONA was created in 1946 on the premises
of existing fishing boat repair workshops. The first few years the
co-operative exploited only fishing boats. In the course of years
boats were replaced by cutters and gradually fish processing lines
were set up. At present the profile and structure of the co-operative
has been changed. All cutters and fishing boats are in private hands
and processing facilities are under ownership changes. Dziwnów has
also very good climate condi-tions as a seaside resort and is therefore
mainly designed for children. It has a fine beach, a park and salt
springs. In summer it is used for sport and recreation. The inhabitants
are mainly employed in the fisheries, but also in the services during
summer season. During summer Dziwnów serviced tourist traffic. In 1998
about 930 passengers took trips onboard ships of the ,,white fleet".
In Dziwnów is the Coastal Rescue Station with rescue vessel and
helicopter located at Szczecin - Dąbie airfield. |
